Varicose veins affect approximately 30% of the U.S. population (70% woman and 30% men). Varicose veins are superficial veins that have become enlarged and have lost their ability to effectively transport blood. 90% of all blood volume is carried by the deep system, which could accommodate a lot more. Therefore those varicose veins are not effectively contributing to your overall circulation. If left untreated, large varicose veins can lead to chronic swelling, skin color changes, eczema type symptoms and finally to ulcerations that might not heal until the veins are eliminated.
A history and physical exam is carried out initially to assess the problem and determine possible etiologies. This is often supplemented by a venous ultrasound evaluation, which provides a detailed “road map” of the superficial and deep veins, allowing us to plan the best course of treatment.
